WHAT'S A GOOD SIZE FIRE PIT

This is a question I get a lot. What's a good size fire pit? What's best for my patio? THere are several fractures here with the first being affordable space. How much space are you willing to donate to the project. You need space obviously, for the fire pit and remember to allow sitting space.

Every yard or application is different so it;s hard to cookie cut a specific detail. I can tell you the most common sizes we see and you can go from there. When we do resorts and most Motels they use a fire pit with an inside diameter of 36 to 40" . This is not required sizing it's just the most we see.

So figure if the inside diameter is say 36". Now you need to calculate how wide you want the coping. The coping, in my terminology is the flat top area of the fire pit. Generally flagstone. This is important real estate. This is also the part where a lot of people say that in hind site they wished they would have made the coping wider. If this is a wood burning fire pit with a safety screen on and you make the coping 10" and after allowing 2" for the screen that only leaves about 4" of actual space that you can some what use. But if you made the coping say 14" this will give you a better are to place a plate or your butt, or a glass of wine. By having a wider coping you can use the fire pit for more the just a fire pit.

So at the 36" inside diameter with say 14" coping that gives us an outside diameter of 36+ (14x2)= 64 inches. SO now figure how much room you want to have around the fire pit. Lets say 4' for a sitting area and such. That now makes the area you need to donate to the project 48" + 48"+ 64"= 92" which is a 11 foot circle. Do you have that much space and do you want to use it for a fire pit?

That's one way to calculate the size of the fire pit another method of approach is to do it back wards. Take some flour and go into the area where you want to put the fire pit. Pour some flour to make an outline of the space you wan to donate to the fire pit. Pour some flour for the area your allowing around the fire pit. Now take the remaining are in the middle and that's the size of fire pit that will fit the area you want to donate. Then figure your coping and you will see what you have left to work with.

How Tall do I want to make the fire pit

This depends on what you want to use it for. I always say the best way I would calculate the height is to sit in a chair and measure to the top of your knees and add an inch or so. At this height you can sit down in a chair and prop your feet up comfortably. After all it is your fire pit. But it could be lower or higher depending on your vision. I really think that fire pits that are flesh with the surface and recessed below grade is a bad and dangerous idea. If someone fell in after a beverage or two the results could be not good. But what about when it's not being used as well. Not good.
